We are looking to appoint an experienced Automation Deputy for the global premiere of Studio Ghibli's My Neighbour Totoro at the Barbican, London this year. This position is offered as a fixed term contract, commencing on 14 August 2022 until 5 February 2023.
As an Automation Deputy, you will report directly to the Head of Automation and participate in the smooth running of the show, to include fitting, installing, commissioning, programming, rehearsals, performances, load in and get-out. You will deputise for the Head of Automation when appropriate and take a senior role in the smooth running of the department.
Key responsibilities include:
Responding to and cooperating with the needs of the Company and Stage Management and Production Manager teams to enable a positive and supportive solution to issues
Acting as duty or operate the Desk [five]/Desk [three] Absolute Motion control console, taking the lead role when required for rehearsals and show running
Assisting the Head of Automation and freelance staff in the installation and operation of all automated elements of the show
Operating the revolving stages for rehearsals
Ensuring proper Working at Height procedures and practices are followed
Keeping the Head of Automation fully informed of issues relating to automation
Attending meetings and notes sessions, responding to show reports and participating in the running of Automation systems
Communicating clearly and liaising with other departments
Participating in regular maintenance and monitoring, including first line fault-finding and repairs
Maintaining and demonstrating high standards of craft skills and technical competence
Deputising for the HOD and taking a lead role in the smooth running of the department
To be suitable for this role, it is essential that you have the following skills and experience:
Knowledge of setting up and operating automation systems in the entertainment industry
An understanding of theatre staging, stage engineering, rigging, slinging and flying
Knowledge and understanding of show control systems in live performance
Ability to fault find and rectify problems in electrical and show control systems
Understanding of hoists, motors and trussing
The ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
Working knowledge and awareness of health and safety legislation, keeping colleagues safe in a theatre environment
Excellent communication and organisational skills
Whilst this post is based at the Barbican in London, you will be required to attend rehearsals for three weeks from 14 August, which are taking place in Stratford-upon-Avon.
